The player has a Hydration (Thirst) metric which starts at 100% and decreases as time passes in the game. It's displayed in the bottom right corner, under the Hunger metric, and is represented by a blue mug. When the Hydration metric reaches 0% then the Health metric will start to fall. The player will slowly heal again if Hydration is restored to above 0%.

It takes 1L of Water to replenish the Hydration level to 100%, which is 2/3 of a Water Bottle.

1L of water is ~55.6 mol of H2O.

The rate at which the Hydration metric drains from 100% to 0% depends on body (lung?) temperature and difficulty level (this is all based on a hunger/thirst rate in settings of 1.0):

30C || 17.4 min || 13.9 min || 10.7 min

Since 100% Hydration is 55.6 mol, this can also be expressed as H2O mol per minute:

In theory you will consume less Hydration if you can lower your body (lung?) temperature to less than 0C, but your suit's settings won't allow you to do this. However this limitation can be overcome on hardsuits (and presumably HARM suits, although the author has not tested them) with a single line of IC10 code. Grab an IC10 chip, write <code>s db TemperatureSetting 263.15</code> to it and pop it in your suit (263.15 is temperature in kelvin and can be edited). This will set your suit to -10 °C. The IC10 chip can be removed from your suit once it's set and it'll stay set as long as you don't screw with the suit's temperature settings. While this will trigger a "low temperature" warning, the AC will have trouble getting down to this temperature, preventing the lung damage that occurs below -10°C from happening. On easy difficulty if you reduce your temperature to near -10C you nearly stop water consumption.

Description
Coolant is a gas or liquid being used as a medium to transfer heat, typically in order to maintain temperature in a room or cool a heat-generating machine. This can be done as simply as placing the gas or liquid in uninsulated pipes in a pressurized environment, but can be augmented through more active means, such as Radiators or Air Conditioner units, or by directly thermally linking two pipe networks, such as using a Heat Eexchanger. This is especially vital for machines that generate heat but require a cooler environment to function, such as Gas Fuel Generators and Stirling Engines, and is also important for maintaining the temperature of rooms used as living spaces or for growing plants.

Types of Coolant
The choice of coolant comes down to several factors. The specific heat of the fluid, which can be found in the Stationpedia, indicates how much energy (in joules) it takes to heat a specific quantity of the fluid by 1 degree (Kelvin or Celsius). The higher the specific heat of the fluid, the more energy it can absorb before rising too much in temperature to be useful, so fluids with a higher specific heat are often better coolants.

Liquids almost invariably have superior energy storage density compared to gases, but can be more difficult to work with due to phase change mechanics. For example, liquid Pollutants have 25 moles per litre, meaning a single 10L pipe segment can hold up to 250 moles of liquid pollutants. To pack that much gaseous pollutants into a single 10L pipe segment, assuming the gas is at 20°C, it would need to be at a pressure of ~61 MPa, which is more than gas pipes are capable of supporting. However, the lower density the liquid, the lower pressure the gaseous form would need to be at to match. Silanol has a liquid density of only 6.25 moles per litre, meaning gaseous Silanol would only need to be at a pressure of ~15 MPa to match.

When using either liquids or gases as a coolant, it is important to remain aware of the phase change thresholds for the fluid. Not only does phase changing change the temperature of the fluid, impairing coolant efficiency, but it can very easily break pipe networks. Gas pipes are put under stress when liquids are present in them, ultimately rupturing if too much liquid accumulates, and liquid pipes have 1/10th the maximum gas pressure limit as gas pipes, potentially causing liquid pipes to burst if too much of the liquid boils off. Both types of pipes break instantly if the fluid in them freezes. As such, selection of coolant relies heavily on the temperature band one is working with. While Carbon Dioxide can be a solid coolant, its relatively high condensation point (as high as -6.8°C) and freezing point (-55.3°C) make it ill-suited for working in low-temperature environments and cooling situations.

From a raw specific heat perspective, Silanol has highest readily available (Sodium Chloride has higher, but is much more difficult to acquire, being only partially implemented at this time, and is only useful in very high temperature applications). In addition, it has a very wide liquid range (-130°C to 550°C), making it very effective in cooling setups that require a broad temperature range. However, it is difficult to acquire (being available only from medium and large liquids traders, and rocket mining), and has a quite low density in liquid form (only 6.25 moles per litre, compared to 55.6 for water), limiting its usefulness as a coolant. Other good options include:

* Pollutants - Relatively mediocre from a statistics perspective (mid-range specific heat, below average latent heat), but are very easy to acquire (most combustion reactions create them) and are otherwise essentially useless. Note that they has a very wide liquid range (-99.8°C to 161°C), are quite prone to condensing when pressurized in gas pipes and require a fairly high pressure (~3.6 MPa at 20°C, versus the maximum 6 MPa for liquid pipes) to keep them in liquid form, so dealing with unwanted phase changing is a common issue when using pollutants as coolant.
* Carbon Dioxide - Has the highest specific heat of the fluids that are gases at room temperature and are relatively easy to acquire. Unfortunately, also has an unusually high condensation point amongst said commonly-available gases, and has an extremely narrow liquid range before freezing in pipes, limiting its usefulness as a coolant to higher-temperature use-cases, or to very specific temperature ranges in liquid form.
* Water - Has a very high specific heat (72, third highest amongst the available fluids in the game, behind only Sodium Chloride and Silanol and a fairly wide liquid range, but also has a number of other important uses (including drinking it), can be difficult to acquire on some worlds, and can be difficult to manage due to how little pressure is required to start condensing it at room temperature.
* Hydrogen or Helium - Jave fairly poor specific heat (~21 J/K), but can be used as a gaseous coolant even at very low temperatures (in the case of Helium, it never changes phase and cannot exist as a liquid), making them good options for coolant cryogenic cooling setups, such as condensing Oxygen for use with a liquid-fueled rocket engine.
* Nitrogen - Has a similarly poor specific heat, but has a fairly low max liquid temperature (-83.1°C), is generally quite readily available (being found in both Nitrice and as a combustion output when using NOS as an oxidizer)), doesn't have as many other uses as some other fluids, and is inert from a combustion perspective.
Helium is the only monoatomic gas in-game, giving it an unrivaled heat capacity ratio of 1.666666. This, along with its low molar mass, make it ideal as a pressurant in specialized rocketry applications where Hydrogen isn't suitable.
While Hydrogen is a superior fuel for rocketry, there is currently no way to refine it from Methane, limiting its available supply. As such, it is recommended to combine it with Nitrous Oxide or Ozone in rocketry applications to maximize its effectiveness.

A suggested alternative use is as a working gas for a Stirling Engine, where it can achieve a conversion efficiency of 18%, surpassing the efficiency of Methane and tying it with Helium.

Hydrogen also has the lowest freezing point of all gases capable of phase change, making it the only choice for extreme cryocooling applications. However, its limited latent heat capacity hinders its performance in that task.

Notes
* The Specific heat of Joule / mol is in-between the specific heat of Hydrogen and Methane in real-life.
* The actual Autoignition temperature of Hydrogen in Oxygen is approximately 570 °C at 1 atm, decreasing to 414°C at 7.4 MPa.
* Unlike Methane, Hydrogen is not toxic to most plants in-game.
* As far as rocketry is concerned, Hydrogen has a mass of 500 mol/kg ( g/mol).

<b>Oxygen</b>, also referred to as <b>O2</b>, is the basic gas necessary for human survival. It is is released when smelting certain ore (such as gold) or by melting Oxite. It is also produced by plants in hydroponic trays or the hydroponics station when they photosynthesize.

Details
Oxygen will condense into Liquid Oxygen starting at 162. The boiling point of Oxygen is 90 at 100 kPa.

Pure Oxygen auto-ignites at 573.15 when in atmosphere at any pressure where volatile gases are present. This may be caused by activating a gas-powered welder, engaging any type of crafting stations working with metal (such as an autolathe), or using any firearm, either of which will create a local temperature spike and the follow-up chain reaction.

Oxygen is mainly used in sustaining human life, either in the ambient atmosphere when your helmet is open, or in your suit's oxygen tank. Oxygen's other roles are in the creation of fuel, as well as Nitrous Oxide through the use of a Nitrolyzer.

Notes
* When used as oxidizer in rocket fuel, oxygen has a mass of 62.4 mol/kg.

Description
Methane or CH4 is a combustible gas in the presence of Oxygen and the breathing gas of the Zrilian species. The main source of Methane on most planets is in the form of Ice (Volatiles) that can be mined on the surface. Methane will autoignite at 300 Celsius or above in the presence of Oxygen, and autoignite at 50 Celsius or above in the presence of Nitrous Oxide.

Composition
Its combustion generates Pollutants, which are also formed through the evaporation of Liquid Sodium Chloride. With the fact it's also toxic to humans and plants, it is possible it's not actually methane but a close relative of it.

Possible compound: CH3Cl (Chloromethane)

Usage
See also: Fuel

Different ratios of Methane and Oxygen will produce different temperatures and pressures during combustion. Combustion will create a large amount of Heat, pressure, and Carbon Dioxide. This reaction is useful inside a Furnace for smelting ores and creating alloys, but can be catastrophic when inside a Canister or a room.

These are the combustion reactions of methane:

Since both reactions results in same amount of heat, but the one with Nitrous Oxide results with less moles, it produces much more heat per amount of matter (2.25 times more heat energy per mole of reaction products). Also, Nitrogen has lower heat capacity than pollutant, which results in even higher temperature.

The reaction rate by default (for example: in atmosphere) depends on temperature as clamp01(1 / (0.002 * (TC + 273.0)1.6 + 0.05) / 5 for oxygen as an oxidizer, and clamp01(1 / (0.0025 * (TC + 273.0)1.01 + 0.05) / 5 for nitrous oxide or ozone. Thus, the maximum default reaction rate is 0.2 and is valid at temperatures below 211C when without nitrous oxide and 107C when enough nitrous oxide is present (>~5%). After that reaction rate decreases logarithmically. At temperatures above 460C, nitrous enriched fuel combusts faster (at approx. 2x rate) than oxygen only. At higher temperatures, the difference is even greater, thus making the reaction more efficient and violent. Some devices (like Combustor or Gas Fuel Generator) increases rate of reaction (to 0.9 i.e. 90% in both cases).

If a combusting gas mix contains CH4 ( Methane ) , NOS, and O2, they all will react proportionally at same rate, according to aforementioned reactions (i.e. at 90% reaction rate and ideally balanced mix, each component will decrease by 90% from it's original amount). When mix is unbalanced and have either excess of volatiles or oxidizers, then proportions decrease accordingly, i.e. with excess of volatiles, only the amount of volatiles corresponding to amount of oxidizers (2 per Oxygen, 1 per Nitrous Oxide) will decrease proportionally; with excess of oxidizers, similarly, only the amount of oxidizers corresponding to the amount of volatiles is decreased at reaction rate, i.e. oxygen reacts at half the rate of nitrous oxide.

Volatiles have a specific heat of 20.4 Joule / mol.

Notes
* The Specific heat of 20.4 Joule / mol is in-between the specific heat of Hydrogen and Methane.
* The actual Autoignition temperature of Chloromethane in Oxygen is 625 °C (1,157 °F; 898 K), the game grossly underestimated the iginition temperature by about 1.56 times.
* Concentrations of methane aboute 1% in atmosphere are lethal to plants, keep attention on that designing a greenhouse, because the Portable Composter Advanced Composter will release Volatiles during the process.
* Enthalpy of Methane (CH4) combustion is precisely 286 kJ/mol (multiplied by 2 when using Nitrous Oxide or Ozone as oxidizers).
* As far as rocketry is concerned, Methane have a mass of 62.5 mol/kg.
* Given the above, Volatiles have a molar mass of 16, suggesting it really is methane (CH₄).

Sources
Ch4 (Methane) can be collected from the following sources:

Pollutant has an isochoric molar heat capacity of 24.8 J/mol⋅K.
It can also be produced by burning Fuel or Coal, smelting most ores (e.g. Iron, Copper, and Silicon) and through human respiration.

Details
Carbon Dioxide will condense into <b>Liquid Carbon Dioxide</b> starting at 265. With such a low temperature requirement, most setups will store Carbon Dioxide as a gas and use Liquid Carbon Dioxide as a coolant.

Carbon Dioxide is required for most plants to grow. Plants will inhale the Carbon Dioxide to create Oxygen which can be harvested using vents. Stationeers should monitor their plants to ensure they always have enough Carbon Dioxide as, given enough time, they can convert all of it into Oxygen.

Carbon Dioxide has an isochoric molar heat capacity of 28.2 J/mol⋅K, making it a superior coolant to Pollutant outside applications involving phase change where Pollutant can make use of its greater latent heat capacity. Both are greatly surpassed by water, though water is harder to find and has more important uses.
